Radio Running Part 1

lol. my first article.

Nick has spent the last 19 years working in the sound industry. He began his formal education in sound from the bottom - learning to coiling and cleaning speaker cables. He has since come a long way and has worked on many big name concerts and tours in Asia and in the UK. Nick is currently employed as the Head of Sound of a major production rental house based in Singapore.

Radio Runners - Part 1
by Nicholas Chua

Radio Runners have a pretty hard job to do. Running of radios, radio running, the mic guy, the mic girl, the mic person. They are called many things, but the job is really about one thing and one thing only - to get a good input into the mic.

Basic training
There are many types of radio running. You have handhelds, you have clip-on mics, you have mics on an instrument, you have mics in a wig, you have rostrum mics on stage, you have mics on the forehead, and one of the worst, you have mics under a hat!
Its my view that to run radios or mics, you need to have some basic understanding of a microphone and how its works. Let’s run through the basics:- The diaphragm picks up moving sound waves (they travel through molecules bouncing off each other) of different frequency and amplitude. This lot then gets converted into electricity. After playing around, it is sent to an electrical coil, which moves, depending on the drivers used, and you pick this up and its sound. Its pretty basic stuff but it will arm you with the knowledge of where a mic’s optimal position should be to pick up the intended/required soundwaves.
Whichever mic a runner uses. One of the simplest show a radio runner might do is possibly being in charge of two mics. One for the Master of Ceremonies, the MC, and the other mic as a spare. A “large” show from a runner’s point of view is simple - more mics to look after, more speakers to mic up, just more of everything.

Q1. Most shows will most likely to have a rundown sheet. Ask for one. The rundown sheet will be helpful in many ways. You will know where the mic is at every one time if you need to get to it (or multiple mics). You will know which mic is going up next in advance, allowing you to do your check at the receivers. You will know which speaker is going up next, allowing you to get the mic to the person, working around your own timetable. You and the Snd Op will be working on the same page, Op knowing which mic is up next. No confusion as to which is next (unless something happens at the last minute like a failed mic that needs to be swapped). With the sheet, you as the runner can at the last minute, plan for a last minute mic that is needed on the stage. Snd Op must know when you are to do this and it will make his/her job easier. The sheet will make your job easier as the radio runner. You will know which mic is free to be used at anyone time for whatever purpose.

Q2. Does the MC hold onto the mic for the entire show? Will the MC have an assistant? Some MCs just like to hold on to their mics. A runner’s job is to know if the MC will be moving around the area. Will the MC be out of range? You have to make sure they are not. As the runner, you must know at every one point during the show where they are and if the mic is with them. And do not allow them to wonder off, not knowing what input the mic might pick up and go live. Some Snd Ops leave the mics ‘live’, some don’t. Check with the Snd Op and make it clear to the MC. A radio runner’s task that could help everyone is to check with the MC or his/her assistant(s) about: Does he/she have a chair/table where the mic will be placed when not in use? Will it drop? Is the mic at any one time safe? Are there any open top liquid containers where the mic is? Liquids and microphones don’t mix very well. The MC mic placed on the rostrum might roll off so make sure the MC does not leave it there.

3. Does the MC provide a good solid sound input into the mic? Is the mic held too far away when they speak? Does the runner need to tell the MC the basics of speaking into the mic?
Alas! Sometimes the runner has to do it. Walk up to the MC and let them know that the way they are holding the mic is wrong. It could be a few things: The angle it is held towards the mouth or the distance from the mouth. Some things just can’t be helped, like the speaker’s actual voice may not be ‘strong’ enough. Popping will also occur at times. And lastly, a runner’s duty is also to ‘educate’ the speaker when speaking into a rostrum microphone.

4. Are there spare batteries with the runner in case something crops up? As for rehearsals, it’s fine to use semi-old stock batteries. Do not use totally dead batts. It is not nice when during rehearsals the mic for the VIP dies. Use semi-old ones. You need to system check all your mics before the show. Power them up with new batteries. Do not save on batteries when it comes to show time. Carefully label the cases of old and new batts. Discard the old batteries accordingly and carry spare new batteries with you at all times - on your person, in your pockets, or on your serving tray. Remember to discard the old batts you have used up as soon as possible, and never mix with any new ones.
In the next part of “Radio Runners”, I will touch on more useful battery tips and the finer points of communicating with the Snd Op.

Bike 2

wa lan.
pract 1 kanna fuk by the instructor non stop, every round i go in the noob training area lol.

when u use to ride, u do things differently from what they taught you in the riding school. 4 fingers on the front brake and clutch. right feet ALWAYS on the rear brake. left feet ALWAYS on the top of the gear change lever unless changing. AND the only leg allowed to touch the floor if you stop.

when u used to ride, u don't really do those huh?  u use two fingers. your legs are wide open to air your balls. u seldom keep your ball of your feet on the rear break and clutch.

oh well.

so as i went round and round the learning area, i did it all wrong. " hello nicholas!! left leg !! no right leg!!!" . ok instructor. lol

your legs must grip the tank. thats cool.

arms locked when doing e break. stiff! loud-hailer again " nicholas! grip the tank!!" yes sir.

every lesson different bike. breaks, clutch and throttle all different. lol. we get a few rounds the circuit to " warmup". so glad for that.

the S course and the crank course is next. hopefully don`t fall on my face.

Some where, no subs

Some show, some where, with no sub frequencies.
Oh well. Set up, normal. Speaker placement, done. Amps plugged up, done.
Cables ran, yup.
Power up than. Done, all normal.

Cd goes into player, check.
Levels into desk, check. No red blinking lights, check.
Input as normal from cd, all ok.
Now the fun part. The outputs.

Outputs to system, normal. System check, done.
Boxes/Component check, done.

 Levels between high boxes, done.
Time between high boxes and subs, done.
Levels between high boxes and FF, done.
Time between high high boxes and FF, done.
Adjustment of levels of components, done. So called " eq'ing " of system, if any, done.
Tuning of system to venue, done.

An " ok sounding " system up and running. And ready for inputs. Did I miss out anything? Pls let me know if I did.

Input. Hmmmm... The whole time doing system checks and tuning and all else, 4 CD's were used. That's it. Just 4. Well recorded disk`s me thinks.

During the above, they were all there. So called highs, mids, lows and subs. All present. The full range. Balanced between high boxes, subs and FF's.
The sub extension fitted nicely with wad ever was coming out the main system. Is this the way? Or not? Let me know.

Also taking into account the lack of humans in the venue, whilst on show day it'll be a full house. Hey subs, sorry gonna turn u up a bit here.

Kk, let's go into the sub crap.

The 4 CD's used had it all. Vocals, techno, mixed, instruments, band type, all sorts.
As for the subs, a particular cd has that. Damm good CD for the low end this one, Antix. Lull. First one min of the track will make any subs work.
Ok, so testing was done with that cd for the sub cabinets. Plus the low end of the Hi box.

Fuk me. Boy was it loud. (subs I meant). And I could even feel my knee caps move on its own. Nice cross over in that processor i think, personnally.

Ok. I though, fuk that the subs work. Nicely pushed up to lvl in with the high cabinets. An overall nice, solid wall of sound heading towards the FOH. Balanced I guess. Had to turn down the subs a bit. Was really kicking hard.
Will do adjustments again when the crowd is in.
I would like to add, these CD's were all played from where the DJ would spin and play all music related to the show. The CD players i mean.
Guess that sorts out the line check from the player to the mixer.

Reh time. Oh well. Sources were, the dj's mac, and also from the video side.
Video tested. In video land, they have recorded some tracks given by me. In WAV format. When he plays those tracks, and the Snd desk gets the source, it's acceptable. These tracks are firstly for system checks only. To check the line from his output to the desk. Not so much for system balancing.

Walking round the venue, back to amps adjusting components, walking out, re adjusting. Did the whole lot. Reh and show time. Sigh.((

When I get the source from the DJ, it is still acceptable. Most tracks.
Lol. Most tracks. Most tracks are "full" sounding. But kinda of missing "something".
Could it be the subs? I would think so. Can I do something bout it? Not too sure. Don't think I could, or ever can.

Some tracks have the really low ends, subs work fine. Most tracks got bout 30% less subs than the others. Most tracks got fuck all subs.

" hey nick. Why no sub? "
Hmm. Errrr. I'm in shit. People start to talk
" why is there no sub?"
Uh oh. i really am in shit. Not doing my job correctly.

Guess I got some explaining to do come monday.

Shit in, shit out, as the saying goes.

Eg, when the source coming into the desk is missing some fq's, I can't amplify those fq's. There's nothing for me to.
When I play my cd, it's all there. Subs included. Level balanced.

So when there are no subs, it's cos I got no "subs" to amp up.

Is it my fault? It could be. Cranking up the lows on the input channels ain't going to help much. Looking at the input eq and bringing up what a person thinks is missing ain't going to get u those "lows".

Hence, whole show no subs, only at certain times. When there's a nice good full signal coming in, yes, subs are there.

Other than that, whole show felt like there's not enough subs.

It is not an issue with " nick not putting enough sub cabinets that's why no subs coming out". It is not an issue with "the cross over in the sub being at the wrong settings" and not allowing those sub-sonic fq's coming out.

The DJ. Source? Their macs. DJ spinners. All music in wad ever format in the computer. MP3? MP4? Don't think it's at lease Wav's. Are those good sources? Compressed?

They are compressed. Hell, Wad was lost at both the high and low ends?
Many sounds/noise you hear are made up of certain fq's. This applies to the whole audible range. If certain fq's are being compressed at the low end, I take it these fq's won't be audible. I also take it when the DJ plays tracks which have certain things "missing", those "missing" things will not get to the sound desk. And when it's not there, nothing will be sent to the amps, and fuk all to amplify.

Tell me if I'm wrong here. I get confused.

Show time. Whole show. Missing subs?

The next day, after the hoo haa of the first day's missing sub, I powered up the system, and chucked in the cd. There it was again. The subs. Present. A bit full for an empty venue, but that's it. Come show time it will be nice. Show sucked. The DJ was a different guy. He follows the MC and plays all his music during the show. Fuk knows where he recorded his music from. 90% no sub fq's.

So on Monday, I report to my boss, who also said there was not enough subs at the venue, to explain myself. Fuk.
